[ Eng. Jimson Weed, Locoweed, Angel's Trumpet, Thorn Apple, Devil's Trumpet, Mad Apple, Stink Weed, Sacred Datura, Green Dragon, and Devil's Trumpet, Holy Flower of the North Star]

Biochemistry Principal active biochemicals: the ß-carboline alkaloids harmine, harmaline, tetrahydroharmine, harmol, harmic acid, methylester harmic amide, acetyl norharmine, harmine N-oxide, harmalinic acid and ketotetra-hydronorharmine are present in the bark, stems, and trunk of B. caapi, B. inebrians, and other species of Banisteriopsis.Tetrahydroharmine occurs in greater concentration in B. caapi than in other plants bearing harmala alkaloids such as Peganum harmala (Syrian rue) and certain species of Passiflora sp. (passionflower). This may account for the more profound and enduring therapeutic effects produced by genuine ayahuasca compared to "analogue" preparations. What is Ayahuasca? The word "Ayahuasca" refers to a medicinal and magical drink incorporating two or more distinctive plant species capable of producing profound mental, physical and spiritual effects when brewed together and consumed in a ceremonial setting. One of these plants is always the giant woody liana vine called ayahuasca (Banisteriopsis caapi or other species). The other plant or plants combined with ayahuasca generally contain tryptamine alkaloids, most often dimethyltryptamine (DMT). The plants most often used are the leaves of chacruna (Psychotria viridis and other species) and oco yagé; also known as chalipanga, chagraponga, and huambisa (Diplopterys cabrerana). This drink is widely employed throughout Amazonian Perú, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia, western Brazil, and in portions of the Río Orinoco basin. It has probably been used in the western Amazon for millennia and is rapidly expanding in South America and elsewhere through the growth of organized syncretic religious movements such as Santo Daime, União do Vegetal (UDV), and Barquinia, among others. In traditional rainforest practice, other medicinal or visionary plants are often added to the brew for various purposes, from purely positive healing (blancura) and divination to malevolent black magic (brujeria, magia negra or rojo). The oldest know object related to the use of ayahuasca is a ceremonial cup, hewn out of stone, with engraved ornamentation, which was found in the Pastaza culture of the Ecuadorean Amazon from 500 B.C. to 50 A.D. It is deposited in the collection of the Ethnological Museum of the Central University (Quito, Ecuador). This indicates that ayahuasca potions were known and used at least 2,500 years ago. Its antiquity in the lower Amazon is likely much greater. The Ayahuasca medicine usually contains both beta-carboline and tryptamine alkaloids. However, some indigenous Amazonian cultures, i.e. Yahua and others, prepare a ceremonial drink from the ayahuasca vine alone. The effects differ in visionary qualities from the more typical composite preparation but with the same profound cleansing and spiritual effects. The beta-carbolines (harmine, harmaline, and tetrahydroharmine) are obtained from the ayahuasca vine (Banisteriopsis caapi). Harmine and harmaline are visionary at near toxic levels, but at modest dosage typically produce mainly tranquility and purgation. Tetrahydroharmine is present in significant levels in ayahuasca. It may be responsible for some of its more profound effects compared to analogue plants such as Syrian rue (Peganum harmala). The ratio of the harmala alkaloids in ayahuasca appears to vary greatly from one geographical area to another in the Amazon basin. The proportions in which they are present likely account for the varied effects reported by shamans from different 'kinds' of ayahuasca even though all are botanically classified as Banisteriopsis caapi. See 'Botanical Species and Shamanic Varieties of Banisteriopsis.' Harmala alkaloids are short term monoamine oxidase inhibitors which render tryptamines orally active by temporarily reducing levels of monoamine oxidase in the body which otherwise rapidly destroys them. The combination of specific serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs, such as Prozac), and most other antidepressants, with Ayahuasca or other MAO inhibitors can cause life support emergencies or death. The principal ayahuasca compounds have a common indole structure which, through several mechanisms, influences certain functions of the central nervous system (CNS). The relevant factor is the biochemical similarity of these compounds to the neurotransmitter serotonin (5-HT). The harmala alkaloids in ayahuasca, primarily harmine and tetrahydroharmine, reversibly inhibit the neuronal enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO). This allows DMT to be active when ingested orally. It also facilitates accumulation of biogenic amines, such as 5-HT, which are normally metabolized by monoamine oxidase enzymes. DMT is a naturally-occurring biochemical substance secreted by the human body in the pineal gland. It occurs in hundreds of plant species worldwide. It can produce very powerful visionary effects when smoked in its pure form or taken orally in Ayahuasca. It is incorrect, however, to characterize the Ayahuasca experience as merely an oral DMT experience activated by a beta carboline MAO inhibitor. The holistic processes at work are far more complex and it is unquestionably the ayahuasca vine which fuels the transformative power and profound teaching of the Ayahuasca experience. Tryptamines (specifically N,N-dimethyltryptamine = DMT) are derived most commonly from the leaves of chacruna (Psychotria viridis and P. carthaginensis). Research is needed to better understand the biochemical, psychotropic, and medicinal properties of various species of Psychotria. In some geographic areas and shamanic lineages, oco yagé (Diplopterys cabrerana =Banisteriopsis rusbyana), also known as chaliponga, chagraponga, and huambisa, is used in addition to or instead of chacruna. Both N,N-dimethyltryptamine and 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine are present in the leaves of Diplopterys. 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine is not present in Psychotria. Chacruna "legitima" Psychotria viridis in full fruitOco yagé is favored by shamans in Ecuador and Colombia, but chacruna is far more commonly used in Perú where many species and varieties of Psychotria are used by curanderos for varied purposes (see chacruna).Diplopterys leaves are 5-10 times more alkaloid-rich than an equivalent amount of Psychotria so fewer leaves are used. The leaves of neither plant are psychoactive if eaten or smoked due to the relatively low alkaloid content and rapid breakdown of alkaloids by monoamine oxidase, a natural human enzyme. Chacruna and oco yagé are similar in their contribution to the Ayahuasca brew, but there are differences in their experiential and spiritual qualities. These differences are evident only to those who know the scope of effects of which each plant is capable. Both bring light and vision to the experience. Chacruna harmonizes with the power of ayahuasca while oco yagé adds power with light (the 5-meo-dmt effect). The 'mareación' (Ayahuasca state of consciousness) produced with chacruna normally lasts four to five hours, while that with oco yagé often lasts over six hours with an extended "afterglow effect" which may last 12-24 hours. The relatively low concentration of 5-methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine in oco yagé contributes a strong effect. Though it does not particularly enrich the visionary experience per se, it is a powerful propellant for shamanic soul flight. This probably accounts for the longer-lasting effect of Ayahuasca containing oco yagé. In northeastern Brazil, a sacramental drink called Jurema is prepared from the root bark of Mimosa hostilis, a common flowering leguminous tree. The bark from the roots of M. hostilis contains the highest concentration of dimethyltryptamine known from any natural source. http://www.biopark.org/ayahuasca.html

Ayahuasca: shifting the assemblage pointDrank ayahuasca tonight, for the fourth time. One thought worth reporting might be explained by way of the great fiction of Carlos Castaneda and his concept of “assemblage point”. Anyone is free to think what they like about his work, but like flies to shit the figures speak for themselves: it is popular. For me the books were instrumental, formative, eye-opening in my early 20s – great metaphors and possibilities for thought patterns, well wrapped in humourous prose in words attributed to Don Juan.
So what did he say? Well…. get off your flippin’ tits, init? Almost. /flow:
“Sufficient personal power leads to the mastery of intent, chiefly the controlled movement of what is known as the assemblage point, which is the center of a bundle of energy emanations emerging from the body. When we are babies, our luminous cocoon is not yet rigid and the assemblage point flows fluidly throughout the luminous cocoon. Humans’ cocoons are intersected throughout by these filaments, producing perception, but as they grow and live in ordinary existence, people filter their perceptions by concentrating on only a small bundle. Focusing on only a small given area this way limits awareness. Ultimately, most adults can only move or shift their assemblage point in dreams, after a trauma, by way of drug use, love, through inner silence, or as is preferred, through Intent. The most straightforward or common form of movement of the assemblage point is achieved through dreaming. Descriptions of dreaming in Castaneda’s books and the varied techniques he employs to achieve mastery of awareness often resemble lucid dreaming. These techniques are comprehensively discussed in The Art of Dreaming.“ Esoteric twang aside, the obvious connection for many psychedelic explorers is that a hallucinogenic drug, or psychedelic substances are exactly psychedelic because they shift the assemblage point, so that the world is felt immensely different, particularly felt in the form of flows, as opposed to static substance. The sandy beach that moves like a snake or a mountain that breathes. With regards to whether Castaneda wrote fiction fantasy or whether his books were based on genuine anthropological field work is kind of irrelevant (if he made it all up, then only more so good on his imagination!): “One way to read the books is as a sort of game, almost like a detective novel. Depending upon one’s approach, they could be either accepted at face-value in their entirety, or discarded. Some of the material could be considered true, some fictional; and some of the events described probably appeared to be real at the time, but could be interpreted as hallucinations.“ Recall Huxley’s table leg, or was it chair? The one in the Doors of Perception anyway. What Huxley describes is the perspective from behind a shifted assemblage point. One tangential note is in order here: psychedelic (mind-manifesting) does not refer, for me, to the altered state, but to the novel state to which one must inevitably return in the recognition of finding “one self” in a non-ordinary reality. Once you have been so far off your head that it was indisputably so, then you know that you have a mind (and a self for that matter), how else could you note its absence? Otherwise known as the “coming down”, this is where some people might stumble and should be seen as an integral part, indeed as the culmination of intent: leaving your self only to return to it anew with the chance to reconfigure it (and thereby embody your experiences). When it comes to ayahuasca there is a tradition, it seems (as also reflected in the Wikipedia quote below), for the blancos and the gringoswho come to the Amazon to deduce by means of pharmacological rationality that the actual effect of ayahusca is the DMT-containing plants that are sometimes brewed along. “Ayahuasca, an entheogenic brew traditionally used in strict ritual context by South American native tribes, is a mixture of Banisteriopsis caapi, a vine containing various harmala alkaloids, and another plant containing N,N-DMT or 5-MeO-DMT alkaloids, usually Psychotria viridis or Diplopterys cabrerana. Modern, western analogues to ayahuasca often substitute Syrian Rue for B. caapi and Mimosa hostilis as a DMT source. As DMT is inactive orally on its own, it must be combined with an MAOI when taken orally in order to cause psychedelic effects.“ This, of course, is the mistake and the misunderstanding – in relation to how things are seen by the yachak (shaman/ayahuasquero). For him, or for her, the ayahuasca is the trip, the business is the ayahuasca. Magic comes from the vine – other plants are just different sub-channels of communication, or facilitators of flow, with the ayahuasca spirit. Therefore, we can go back to the idea of an assemblage point shift: ayahusca does just that: shifts the assemblage point. Ayahuasca hacks the metabolism and neutralises (inhibits) one particular kind of amino acid in the stomach, thereby shifting the assemblage point of the body: “MAOIs act by inhibiting the activity of monoamine oxidase preventing the breakdown of monoamine neurotransmitters and so increasing the available stores. There are two isoforms of monoamine oxidase, MAO-A and MAO-B. MAO-A preferentially deaminates serotonin, melatonin, adrenaline and noradrenaline. MAO-B preferentially deaminates phenylethylamine and trace amines. Dopamine is equally deaminated by both types. Many formulations use forms of fluoride attached to assist getting past the blood-brain barrier and is suspected as a factor in pineal gland effects.“ For the yachak the ayahuasca opens up channels of communication that with focus and concentration can be navigated, at will (“mastery of intent”, as it were), and in this understanding the DMT channel is just one particular sub-set of ayahuasca experiences. Finally, we find ourselves back at the by now familiar story about the conflict between Parmenides and Heraclitus. A good anti-capitalist point of departure to toward an understanding of the difference between Heraclitus’ flow model (fixity is an illusion, all is constant change) of the universe and Parmenides’ substance model (change is an illusion, there are only objects) is provided by David Graeber, who writes that “theories that start from action fall so far outside the main currents of the Western intellectual tradition that it’s hard for most scholars to figure but exactly what to do with them. They belong, one might say, to the Heracliteantradition, which in Western thought has always been somewhat marginal.” He continues to summarise the dispute between Parmenides and Heraclitus. What we may conclude here, is that the focus on the DMT as the psychoactive ingredient is a focus mainly on the substance of the DMT, as permitted by the substantial effect of the ayahuasca, but for the yachak the ayahusaca changes the flow of your system – through which anything might run, if you add it, will it or otherwise influence yourself with something. In the final moment of alphabetic agency for tonight, after all it is late and I was slightly tripped out earlier -without the DMT substance carrier, experiencing the flow of ayahusca (with cannabis and a bit of red wine, both of which go well hand in hand with the ayahusca spirit, who welcomed particularly the former)- all there is left to say is that when focusing on substance and prioritising it over and above flow, we allow only for thin descriptions, whereas an embodied recognition of flow opens up for thick descriptions. The thicker the description, the greater the sensorium, – I think. Well, I guess you can’t end like that. Hmm…. Ok, I paste something from thesis world for your perusal, in case further explanation of thick and thin descriptions are desired (it’s derived from a discussion of Free Software source code, but with a bit of imagination should connect to the story above and make clearer ……..): As a means with which to distinguish between different forms of peer-review the concepts of thick and thin descriptions, as introduced by Gilbert Ryle (1971)1 and developed in the context of an “interpretive theory of culture” by Clifford Geertz (1973)2, are useful. The concept of a thick description was delivered by Ryle clad in a story of a boy winking to deliver a secret message “according to an already understood code”: “Two boys fairly swiftly contract the eyelids of their right eyes. In the first boy this is only an involuntary twitch; but the other is winking conspiratorially to an accomplice. At the lowest or the thinnest level of description the two contractions of the eyelids may be exactly alike. From a cinematograph-film of the two faces there might be no telling which contraction, if either, was a wink, or which, if either, were a mere twitch. Yet there remains the immense but unphotographable difference between a twitch and a wink.” For Geertz the “little stories Oxford philosophers like to makeup for themselves” were too artificial, but the conceptual difference between a thick and a thin description was obvious to Geertz, who as an ethnographer reflected on his own position: “What the ethnographer is in fact faced with–except when (as, of course, he must do) he is pursuing the more automatized routines of data collection–is a multiplicity of complex conceptual structures, many of them superimposed upon or knotted into one another, which are at once strange, irregular, and inexplicit, and which he must contrive somehow first to grasp and then to render.” Ryles used the term “established codes”, the specific use of which Geertz questioned in his appreciation of Ryle’s conceptualisation: “Analysis, then, is sorting out the structures of signification–what Ryle called established codes, a somewhat misleading expression, for it makes the enterprise sound too much like that of the cipher clerk when it is much more like that of the literary critic–and determining their social ground and import.” (my italics) On that note we may also make a general claim: a peer-review of any creative process will involve an aesthetic judgment on some level. It may unconsciously influence reviewers’ opinions, in the form of the flow of prose, for instance, or it may be prioritised lower than, say, the logical unfolding in the structure of the argument it communicates, but the very notion of creativity is inevitably linked to aesthetics. Without entering into a philosophical debate about the problems of aesthetics, we can accept that: “Judgments of aesthetic value clearly rely on our ability to discriminate at a sensory level. Aesthetics examines what makes something beautiful, sublime, disgusting, fun, cute, silly, entertaining, pretentious, discordant, harmonious, boring, humorous, or tragic.” However, aesthetics is a problematic term that would require further discussion to be usable here, but we can observe that more than just simple economic performance facts and how a computer programme runs graphically on a screen goes into an individual evaluation, or collective peer-review process, of the programme at hand. In general, we may say that hackers attach a significant value to creativity and beauty in the presentation and structure of code: is it neat, is it sophisticated, is it elegant, and does it solve problems imaginatively? Likewise, we’d be ill adviced to look only at the substantial function of an ayahuasca experience in the image of the DMT – when the code behind is what flows to allow the “difference that makes a difference”. 1http://lucy.ukc.ac.uk/CSACSIA/Vol14/Papers/ryle_1.html 2http://hypergeertz.jku.at/GeertzTexts/Thick_Description.htm http://colonos.wordpress.com/2007/01/24/ayahuasca-shifting-the-assemblage-point/ |

Communicating with Plants
Submitted by Bob Makransky
Plants’ experience of being in the world is very different from the experience of us animals. Because plants cannot move about, they exist in a state of profound acceptance and peace within themselves.
Emotions such as fear, hate, jealousy, possessiveness, etc. are wholly unknown to plants and would serve no useful purpose. On the other hand, plants are capable of experiencing a wide range of higher emotions the like of which we animals could scarcely conceive.
At the same time, there are feelings which plants share with us animals, such as love, pain, joy, thirst, etc. It is the feelings we share with plants that provide the basis of our ability to communicate with them.
Feeling with plants is not so different from feeling with people. For example, when we are about to have sex with someone who really turns us on, we feel a palpable surge of sexual energy connecting us to that person. Similarly, when we walk into a room to face someone who is madder than hell at us, we feel connected to that person by a palpable wave of anger and fear.
When a baby smiles at us, we feel a rush of joy that has us automatically smile back. However, most of our interactions with other people do not have this feeling of connectedness and emotional immediacy. Most of the time we don’t even look the people we are addressing in the eye, let alone feel with them.
Because of our social training, we tend to regard sharing feelings with other people as threatening. We are taught to close up and defend ourselves, and to keep our interactions as sterile and devoid of feeling as possible.
In order to communicate with plants (or people), you have to be able to regard them as your equals. If you are afraid (ashamed) to talk with homeless people, beggars, crazy people, etc. then you’ll also find it difficult to talk with plants. However, it’s actually easier to communicate with plants than it is to communicate with people because plants don’t have defenses and self-importance agendas in place, which engage our own defenses, and self-importance agendas.
To feel with plants (or people) doesn’t mean to gush all over them; all it means is to recognize them as beings whose feelings are as important to them as your feelings are to you.
When first learning to communicate with plants, it helps to be in contact with the same individual plants on a daily basis. Ideally you should go out, preferably alone, to the same tree or meadow for at least a few minutes every day. If you can’t do this, cultivating garden or houseplants will work just as well, although it’s easiest to communicate with large trees.
This is because from a feeling (light fiber) point of view, humans and trees are very much alike – the light fiber (auric glow) configurations of both humans and trees are quite similar, whereas that of insects, for example, is very different from either. It is easier for humans and trees to communicate with each other than it is for either to communicate with insects.
Now even the least psychic person, going up to a large tree, should be able to pick up something of the personality (mood) of that tree. How does the tree make you feel – happy, sad, loving, jolly, heavy? Can you pick up its sex: sense a male or female presence – or its age: young and vigorous or old and mellow?
This isn’t all that hard to do – you can call upon your senses to buttress your feelings, as in the exercise of seeing pictures in the clouds, except that you do it by feeling rather than thinking – by relaxing into the process rather than controlling it. It’s exactly what a rationalist would term “anthropomorphism.”
For example, spiky trees (like palmettos and Joshua trees) have a sassy, masculine energy. Cedar trees tend to be clowns or wise guys. Banana trees are joyous and loving.
Weeping trees really do have a doleful air about them. Tall, erect trees have proud and regal personalities. Trees that seem to be reaching longingly for the heavens are reaching longingly for the heavens.
A good time to learn to connect emotionally with trees is when they’re dying. The next time you see a tree being felled, pause and quiet down your thoughts and watch it attentively. You should easily be able to feel the tree’s agony just before it falls, since trees (and all beings) are filled with power at the moment of their deaths and profoundly affect the beings around them.
Loggers triumphantly yell “Timber!” when a tree falls to cover their sense of shame and disconnectedness – to block communication with the tree at the moment of its death.
Another good time to pick up on plants’ feelings is when they are in motion. Plants are happiest when they are moving – blown by the wind and the rain. Wave back to them when they wave at you (it’s only polite). Watch how they dance in the breeze. See how the trees, which overhang roads and walkways, cast down blessings on all who pass beneath them.
See how the young growing tips are more alert, vigorous, and naively impetuous than the older and mellower lower leaves. Be aware of the awareness of plants: when you walk through a wood or meadow, feel as though you were walking through a crowd of people, all of whom are watching you.
Some people pick up on the feelings of plants by seeing faces in the bark or foliage. They impose that thought form (of a face with a giggly, dour, saucy, etc. expression) over the feeling of the tree, since that’s how most people are conditioned to interpret feelings – by associating them with facial expressions.
What we’re tying to get at are feelings, which can be apprehended directly, without any need for sensory cues. However, the senses can provide a useful point of reference and serve as a bridge between imagination and pure feeling, which is how they function in dreams.
When you see with your feelings rather than your mind, your visual attention isn’t focused on any one thing, but rather everything within your field of vision strikes your attention with equal impact (vividness), as it does in dreams. To see this way you have to have your mind quiet, and you have to be in a joyous and abandoned mood. If you’re bummed out or grumpy, you won’t be able to see what plants are feeling any more than you’d be able to see a baby smile at you.
Much of our social training entails learning to stifle our senses – to not see what is right before our eyes, to not listen to what our ears are hearing, to be offended by smells, discomfited by touch. Cutting off our senses leaves us feeling apathetic and disconnected from our world. Therefore, if we want to renew our feeling of connectedness which we had as infants, we have to start plugging our senses into our feelings again. And because they are so non-threatening, feeling with plants is a good place to start.
Not only do different species of plants have different feelings associated with them, but also there is considerable individual variation in personalities between different plants of the same species, between different branches on the same plant, and even between different leaves on the same branch.
By lightly holding a leaf for a moment between your thumb and forefinger, you can feel which leaves want to be picked for medicine or food purposes and which ones want to be left alone. The leaves that want to be picked have a high, vibrant feel to them, whereas leaves that don’t want to be picked feel dead in your hand.
Even if you can’t seem to tune in to the feelings of plants, you can still telepathically “talk” with them. Plants can talk to you in thoughts, and these (at first) seem indistinguishable from your own thoughts. That is, it will seem to you that you are the one who is thinking these thoughts, when in fact it is the plants that are sending you messages. That’s why it’s important to have your own mind as quiet as possible – to be in a relaxed mood – if you expect plants to talk to you; if your own mind is buzzing, there’s no way the plants can get a word in edgewise. Any thoughts or feelings you have while sitting under a tree or working with plants are probably messages from the plants.
So how do you know if you are actually communicating with a plant, and not just imagining it? The answer is: you don’t. You just go with your intuition rather than going with your concepts, what you’ve been taught.
Instead of hypnotizing yourself into believing that the world of concepts is reality, you hypnotize yourself into believing that the world of feelings – of magic – is reality. The only difference between these two equally valid points of view is that from one of them plants talk to you, and from the other they don’t.
If you feel self-conscious talking to plants, just remember that what you have been programmed to call the “real” world is merely a figment of your imagination also.
And if you start calling something else the real world, then that something else becomes the real world; it becomes as real as this one.
If you’re dubious, just ask the plant over and over, “Is this you, Mr. or Ms. Plant talking to me, or am I just imagining it?” And if you keep getting the same answer over and over, “It’s me, the plant! It’s me, the plant!” – then just assume that it is indeed the plant talking to you, and listen to what it has to say.
You can ask questions and get answers, both questions and answers coming as though you were holding a conversation in your own mind.
It’s easy to learn to talk with house and garden plants, since these are particularly eager to discuss matters such as fertilization, watering, shade, grafting and transplanting techniques, etc. But in addition to such mundane affairs, plants (particularly large trees) can give you helpful advice on all sorts of matters. Take them your problems; ask them what they think you should do.
Some of my best friends and most trusted advisers are trees.
Whether you are consciously aware of it or not, you are already communicating with plants all the time. The soothing, healing, tranquilizing feeling that comes when you are gardening or are out in nature is in fact your psychic attunement to the joyous vibrations of the plants around you. To follow this feeling one step further – to its source – is to put yourself into direct communication with the plants.
It’s as easy as smiling at a baby.
